Frequently asked questions

Are banks closed on Saturdays?

Banks are closed on the second and fourth Saturday of every month and open on the first, third and fifth Saturdays. This has applied to all scheduled and non-scheduled banks since September 2015.

Who decides bank holidays in India?

Bank holidays are declared under the Negotiable Instruments Act, 1881. State governments notify most of them, which is why they differ by state. RBI publishes the list for each of its regional offices on its website.

Which bank holidays apply across India in 2026?

Only 4 dates are holidays at every RBI office in 2026: Republic Day (26 January), Independence Day (15 August), Gandhi Jayanti (2 October) and Christmas (25 December). Everything else depends on the state.

Do UPI, NEFT and ATMs work on bank holidays?

Yes. UPI, IMPS, NEFT and RTGS run 24×7 including holidays, and ATMs and net banking stay available. Cheque clearing, branch services and some loan or deposit processing wait until the next working day.

What happens to an EMI or SIP due on a bank holiday?

Auto-debits through NACH are usually presented on the next working day. Check your loan or mutual fund terms, and keep enough balance from the original date.

Why is 1 April a bank holiday?

Banks close to the public on 1 April in most regions for the annual closing of accounts. RBI lists it separately from festival holidays.

How current is this list?

It is RBI's list as retrieved on 19 October 2026. States sometimes add holidays at short notice (for elections, for example), so check RBI's holiday page before an important branch visit.
