Monthly pension = corpus × annuity share × annuity rate ÷ 12
The corpus grows like a monthly SIP. To compare with a pure equity SIP, try the SIP calculator; for the guaranteed part of your retirement, see the EPF calculator.
Frequently asked questions
How much NPS can I withdraw at 60?
Under PFRDA's exit regulations amended in December 2025, non-government subscribers can take up to 80% of the corpus as a lumpsum and must use at least 20% to buy an annuity. A corpus up to ₹8 lakh can be withdrawn in full. The earlier split was 60:40. Government employees follow separate rules.
Is the NPS lumpsum tax-free?
Only 60% of the corpus is tax-free on exit. The tax law has not yet been changed to match the 80% withdrawal limit, so any lumpsum above 60% is taxed at your slab. The monthly pension from the annuity is also taxed as income.
What return should I assume for NPS?
NPS returns are market-linked and depend on your mix of equity, corporate bonds and government securities. There is no guaranteed rate, so test a conservative figure such as 8–10% and a lower one to see the range.
What tax benefits does NPS give?
Own contributions count under 80CCD(1) within the ₹1.5 lakh 80C limit, plus an extra ₹50,000 under 80CCD(1B), both in the old regime only. Employer contributions are deductible under 80CCD(2) up to 14% of basic + DA in the new regime and 10% in the old regime.
Can I exit NPS before 60?
Yes, but on a premature exit only 20% can be taken as a lumpsum and at least 80% must buy an annuity, unless the corpus is ₹5 lakh or less, in which case it can be withdrawn in full.
How is the monthly pension worked out?
Pension = annuity purchase amount × annuity rate ÷ 12. Annuity rates depend on the insurer, your age and the option you choose (for example with or without return of purchase price), so the rate here is an editable example.
