How EPF is calculated
Yearly interest = Σ (month-end balance) × rate ÷ 12
Each month you put in 12% of basic + DA (plus any VPF). Your employer also pays 12%, of which 8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000 goes to EPS. Interest is added once a year, so the next year earns on it too.
Monthly contribution split

| ₹15,000 | ₹1,800 | ₹550 | ₹1,250 |

Frequently asked questions
What is the EPF interest rate now?
8.25% for FY 2025-26, recommended by EPFO's Central Board of Trustees on 2 March 2026 and notified by the government. It is the same rate as in FY 2023-24 and FY 2024-25.
How is EPF interest calculated?
Interest is worked out every month on the running balance at the yearly rate divided by 12, and the total for the year is credited to your account after the financial year ends. It compounds yearly because each year's interest becomes part of the next year's balance.
How is my employer's 12% split?
8.33% of wages up to ₹25,000 a month (at most ₹2,083) goes to the Employees' Pension Scheme and the rest goes to your EPF account. The ceiling was ₹15,000 (₹1,250 to EPS) until it was raised from 17 September 2026. Employers may pay 12% on your full basic or only on wages up to the ceiling.
Is EPF interest taxable?
Interest is tax-free except on your own contributions above ₹2.5 lakh a year (₹5 lakh if your employer does not contribute); interest on the excess is taxed at your slab. Employer contributions to EPF, NPS and superannuation together above ₹7.5 lakh a year are also taxable. A withdrawal before 5 years of continuous service is taxable.
What is VPF and is it worth it?
Voluntary Provident Fund lets you contribute more than 12%, up to 100% of basic + DA, at the same EPF rate. Your employer does not have to match it. It is a simple way to earn 8.25% with sovereign backing, but watch the ₹2.5 lakh limit on tax-free interest.
When can I withdraw my EPF?
The full balance at retirement from 58, and partial withdrawals before that for needs such as housing, medical treatment, education and marriage, subject to EPFO's service and amount conditions. Check the current rules on the EPFO member portal before you apply.
