How to use the net worth calculator
- Enter the current value of each asset: bank balances, deposits, EPF, PPF and NPS, funds and stocks, gold, property and vehicles.
- Enter what is still outstanding on each loan and on your credit cards.
- Read your net worth, liquid net worth and debt-to-asset ratio.
- Check where your assets are concentrated and read the suggestions.
Net worth formula
Net worth = total assets − total liabilities
- Liquid net worth = cash + deposits + funds and stocks + gold − total liabilities.
- Debt-to-asset ratio = total liabilities ÷ total assets × 100.
Worked example
| Measure | Amount |
|---|---|
| Total assets | ₹86,50,000 |
| Total liabilities | ₹38,30,000 |
| Net worth | ₹48,20,000 |
| Liquid assets | ₹13,50,000 |
| Liquid net worth | -₹24,80,000 |
| Debt-to-asset ratio | 44.3% |
The calculator's starting figures: a household with a home worth ₹60,00,000 and a home loan of ₹35,00,000. Most of its net worth is in the home, so its liquid net worth is negative even though its net worth is healthy.
Growing your net worth
- Pay off expensive debt first, starting with credit cards and personal loans.
- Keep an emergency fund so a shock does not add new debt; size it with the emergency fund calculator.
- Invest regularly for long-term goals; see what a monthly SIP can grow to.
- Value assets honestly. An inflated property estimate makes you feel richer without changing anything.
Frequently asked questions
How do I calculate my net worth?
Add up everything you own at today's value (bank balances, deposits, EPF, PPF, NPS, mutual funds, stocks, gold, property and vehicles) and subtract everything you owe (home, car and personal loans, credit card dues and other borrowing). The result is your net worth.
What is liquid net worth?
Liquid net worth counts only assets you can turn into cash within days: bank balances, deposits, mutual funds, stocks and gold. It subtracts all your debts. It shows how well you could handle a shock without selling property or touching retirement accounts.
What is a good debt-to-asset ratio?
Total liabilities divided by total assets. Below about 30% is generally comfortable, 30–50% is manageable if your income is steady, and above 50% means debt is a large part of your finances. A new home loan pushes the ratio up for a few years, which is normal.
Should I include my home in my net worth?
Yes, at a realistic current market value, along with the home loan against it. But you cannot spend your home without selling it, which is why the calculator also shows liquid net worth.
How should I value gold and vehicles?
Value gold at today's rate for its purity, less any making charges you would not get back. Value vehicles at their resale price, which falls every year, not the price you paid.
How often should I calculate my net worth?
Once or twice a year is enough. Compare it with the previous figure to see whether your savings and investments are growing faster than your debts.
